The High Efficiency Purification System (HEPS Air Purifier)

The new High Efficiency Purification System (HEPS purifier) will give you better health, comfort and well-being. It is a powerful optional extra, which can be added to the Hi-Velocity mini duct system to create a cleaner and healthier indoor environment.

The purifier reduces all three types of serious indoor air contamination by removing the airborne toxins, allergens, bacteria and viruses hazardous to human health from the air that you breathe.

NASA chose the HEPS purifier for the newest Space Station because of its effectiveness. This same successful technology is now available for you in the UK.

The purifier is of real benefit to everyone, but especially allergy sufferers, children, the elderly and the chronically ill. There is a growing need for this technology as new types of viruses and antibiotic resistant forms of staph and tuberculoses bacterium are developing all the time.

What will the HEPS purifier do for you?

Helps you stay healthy and feel well
• Creates a healthier indoor environment and cleaner air up to 3000 square feet per unit

How does it work?
The HEPS purifier has six worldwide patents and is unique because it combines three technologies into one product. This powerful combination of technologies reduces all three types of indoor air contamination:

  1. Particulates include pollen, fungal spores, dust mites and lung damaging dust. They are 0.3 - 10 microns in size. particulates can trigger allergies, hay fever, asthma, emphysema and chronic bronchitis
  2. Microorganisms are bacteria (1 to 0.3 microns) and viruses (0.001 microns). They cause diseases including influenza, common colds, tuberculosis, Legionella and pulmonary disease
  3. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are gas-phase chemicals, fumes and odours and are 0 .001 to gas molecules in size. Symptoms associated with VOCs include headaches, dizziness, irritation of eyes, nose and throat, constriction of airways and fatigue.  VOCs are emitted from certain solids or liquids including paint solvents, automobile exhaust, ozone, pesticides, cleaning fluids, chemicals and alcohol. They also include combustion by-products, such as carbon monoxide, NOX, propane and methane, and cconstruction materials including carpets, particleboard, foam insulation, floor finishes, laminated counters and man made materials

What are the three technologies?

High efficiency electrostatic particle filtration
The HEPS MERV–11Electrostatic Particle Filtration system (UK grade F5 to EN779) removes up to 96.3% of microscopic particles and airborne allergens as small as 0.3 microns in size. (The average human hair is 80 microns in size and a bacterium is 1 micron).  The unique new media design provides higher efficiency on fine particulates with low air resistance whilst maintaining high dirt loadings and low static back pressure. The filter is capable of filtering out bacteria, viruses, fungal spores, dust mites, pollen, insect dust, animal dander and tobacco smoke.  These microscopic particles are known to be some of the primary causes of disease, asthma, emphysema, hay fever, chronic bronchitis and allergies.

The system uses full-length 25” germicidal ultraviolet lamps (wave length 254 nanometres) with aluminum reflectors. The ultraviolet light kills disease germs on contact and the photo-catalytic oxidation destroys toxic chemicals and eliminates odours. The titanium catalyst is a powerful oxidiser, and works with the germicidal ultraviolet light to efficiently deactivate microorganisms.

Most disease causing bacteria and viruses are deactivated with levels of ultraviolet light of 8,000 microwatts per centimetre squared per second or less. Where mould spores are not easily destroyed with ultraviolet light due to the long exposure time needed, mechanical filters are used to remove mould spores that are 4 - 6 microns in size. The more passes through the ultraviolet field and the greater the intensity of the ultraviolet lights, the greater the reduction of germs in the air.

Laboratories will not perform efficacy tests on dangerous germs due to their infectious nature. They test ultraviolet equipment using surrogate germs that are not infectious but are destroyed with the same level of ultraviolet radiation.  Test were run on non-harmful background heterotrophic bacteria found commonly in the air of all indoor environments as they require much more ultraviolet exposure for deactivation than typical disease causing micro organism.

The filter has a six-month service life and a low replacement cost. The ultraviolet lamps are replaced only once a year.

ASHRAE rating
The American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) sets the standards and test protocol for the entire USA.  Many other countries also use their standards.

ASHRAE rates the HEPS purifier to ASHRAE Standard 52.2, showing its reliability and consistency.

Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV-11 rating)
The MERV-11 rating is a comparison formula that is established by averaging together a number of different micron sizes. While a MERV-11 filter is 91% efficient at 5.0 microns, it is 24% efficient at 0.3 microns. However, if the particle count is reduced by 24% three to four times per hour, a lower total particle count in the range of 86% to 92% overall room reduction will be achieved. It is therefore more important to have all the indoor air pass through the filter three to four times per hour.

This filter has a six month service life and a low replacement cost.

Titanium photo-catalytic oxidation
Photo-catalytic oxidation efficiently reduces the broad spectrum of gas-phase toxic, chemical fumes (VOCs) and household odours by up to 90%. It is an effective process for removing and destroying low level pollutants in indoor air, including bacteria, viruses and fungi.

The purifier has 70 square feet of titanium surface area.  A titanium oxide mesh acts as a catalyst. It reacts with airborne chemicals, including carbon monoxide, and breaks them down into benign constituents such as carbon dioxide and water. (Ref.1).

Photo-catalytic oxidation does not wear out or lose its effectiveness. This is unlike chemical adsorbents, which can rapidly absorb large quantities of toxic fumes, but quickly become saturated and slowly release pollutants back into the air stream.

Ultraviolet germicidal air disinfection
Ultraviolet germicidal air disinfection reduces airborne disease germs.  Two lamps provide ultraviolet light 10,000 times the intensity of sunlight. These kill viruses and bacteria too small to be filtered out by a HEPA filter, on impact.  Germicidal ultraviolet light with a wave length of 254 nanometres has been used for over 60 years for the control and eradication of both viral and bacterial contamination in hospitals, water purification plants, pharmaceutical companies, ultra-pure water systems for semiconductor manufacturing and air purification to name a few.

This ultraviolet technology, combined with photo-catalytic oxidation, is the most important feature in air purification. The two processes work together to become an even more powerful means of deactivating micro-organisms.

Most disease causing bacteria and virus are deactivated with levels of ultraviolet light of 8,000 microwatts per centimetre squared per second or less. Mould spores are not easily destroyed with ultraviolet light due to the long exposure time needed. Removal of mould spores which are 4-6 microns in size is accomplished by the use of mechanical filters.

Research
The results of test data requested by the government of Hong Kong, and conducted at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Dept. of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology, showed a reduction in VOCs and airborne bacteria of 90% after 21/2 hours of operation.

This confirms that this combination technology will reduce of bacteria in the air from 111 colony-forming units per square meter to 7 cfu (colony forming units) per cubic metre in two hours. After two hours, the level of bacteria was reduced to below the level of detection (Reference 1).
